Canada’s New EV Rebates are Here: What This Means for Drivers in 2026
The future of driving in Canada has just become more affordable.
The Government of Canada has announced the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP), a new 5-year, $2.3-billion initiative designed to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs) by offering direct-to-consumer, point-of-sale incentives.
So, if you’ve been thinking about buying an electric vehicle, now could be the perfect time to make that move.
Here’s a breakdown of how the program works, whether you might qualify, and how you can benefit from it through Go Auto.

What is the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP)?
The Electric Vehicle Affordability Program is a new federal initiative designed to make zero-emission vehicles more accessible for Canadians.
Through EVAP, the Government of Canada will offer point-of-sale incentives for eligible vehicles:
Up to $5,000 for fully electric vehicles (battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell)
Up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)
The program runs from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031, or until funding runs out, whichever comes first.
Who Is Eligible?
According to the EVAP Vehicle List, to be eligible for the incentive, a vehicle must:
- Be a new vehicle, meaning a vehicle registered for the first time
Eligible EVs with an odometer with less than 10,000 km qualify as demonstrators (vehicles that buyers can test drive at a dealership)
Be bought or leased* on or after February 16, 2026
- Have a final transaction value of $50,000 or less
Note: there is no final transaction value cap for Canadian-made EVs
Be made in Canada or in countries that have a free-trade agreement with Canada
Meet all of Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
Be highway-capable (no low-speed vehicles) and meant for use on public roads
Have at least 4 functioning wheels, and
*Transactions initiated prior to February 16, 2026, do not qualify for an incentive, regardless of the delivery date.

Why 2026 Is the Best Time to Buy an EV
One important thing to remember about EVAP is that its incentives are at their peak when it first launches and tend to decline over time. Why is this significant? Drivers who switch early can enjoy the maximum savings available!
Since incentives are expected to decrease in the coming years, 2026 offers the best opportunity to lower the cost of purchasing an EV.
Vehicle type | 2026 | 2027 | 2028 | 2029 | 2030 |
Battery electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles | $5,000 | $4,000 | $3,000 | $3,000 | $2,000 |
Plug-in hybrid vehicles | $2,500 | $2,000 | $1,500 | $1,500 | $1,000 |
