Celebrating Pride at Go Auto

We sat down with Jordan Winterhalt, the General Manager of Jaguar Land Rover Calgary, who recently shared insights into his experiences as a gay professional in the automotive industry.

In an interview, Jordan opened up about the challenges he faced early in his career due to his 2SLGBTQI identity, including the struggle to be open and the fear of not advancing professionally. Over time, with the support of friends and colleagues, he embraced his true self, which strengthened his resolve and helped him succeed.

Can you share with us your experience of being part of the 2SLGBTQI community in the automotive industry? How has your identity shaped your career journey?

Early on in my career, I struggled with being open with my identity with people in the industry. For years this was very difficult as I did not feel that I had the professional support to be open, even fear of potentially not advancing due to my LGTQ+ identity. As I developed personally and professionally over the years, I was motivated by the authenticity of my community and colleagues to be my true self. This early hardship gave me strength and will to push forward and succeed.

Have there been any specific challenges or obstacles you've faced related to your 2SLGBTQI identity while working in this industry? How did you navigate these challenges?

Yes, although I was determined to be successful in the automotive business and a proud member of the LGTBTQ+ community I experienced periods of self-doubt. The obstacles for me were my perception of the historic treatment of gay men in the business community were being in the “closet” was an expectation. To me, this meant proving myself was a priority and over time as my network and business contacts grew, I overcame those insecurities and have been able to create positive experiences for our clients.

In what ways do you think the automotive industry can become more inclusive and supportive of 2SLGBTQI professionals?

I will start with saying how happy and proud I am of how inclusive the auto industry is and that I am thankful to be at my particular workplace. As an industry we can continue the progress of giving a voice those who may have been overlooked in the past. We can continue to grow our network, assert of voice and call out any inequality that exists

Have you encountered instances of discrimination or bias based on your sexual orientation or gender identity in your professional life? How did you address or overcome these situations?

I refer back to my statement about self-doubt, when I questioned an interaction of the meaning of someone’s words I also needed to process through my perception or their intent. In any case, a peer, potential customer or an existing client my goal was always to win them over and ensure a positive experience for all.

How important do you think it is for automotive companies to promote diversity and inclusion, particularly for 2SLGBTQI employees? What initiatives or changes would you recommend to foster a more inclusive environment?

We have seen many cases of positive progress of industries embracing the LGTBQ+ community and it is important for the automative industry to continue that progress. It is equally important that this authentic and not a check box exercise without any true meaning. When the curriculum is developed for DEI training, I would encourage that the content is validated with gay voices and other communities included.

How have your colleagues and peers generally responded to your 2SLGBTQI identity in the workplace? Have you found a strong support network within the industry?

My peers have been overwhelmingly supportive and my identity has not been subject to any special attention or ceremony. My network is always supportive

Senior leadership have always been supportive and encouraging which has enabled me to thrive in the organization. Being my true self was in all aspects of my life makes me a more effective employee, colleague and service provider to our clients.

What advice would you give to other 2SLGBTQI individuals aspiring to leadership roles in the automotive sector based on your own experiences?

Don’t place limitations on yourself, be aware of your perceptions. Be prepared for setbacks and remember that to be successful your state will vary from survive to strive and then thrive, and one bad day can put you back into survive mode. Your colleagues and network are always a good place to receive support.

Being part of the 2SLGBTQI community has been an asset to my career as overcoming personal challenges of sexuality has given me the ability to be a stronger, more compassionate leader.

Have you observed any positive changes or progress in terms of 2SLGBTQI inclusivity within the automotive industry over the course of your career? Are there areas where more improvement is needed?

I echo what I said above, we can sustain the progress we have seen in important ways where our voices are amplified and the efforts of inclusivity are meaningful.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes or aspirations for greater 2SLGBTQI representation and acceptance within automotive companies? What steps do you believe are necessary to achieve these goals?

I wish I knew all the answers and what I can speak to is the importance of self-confidence, courage and picking the right workplace where you know you can be yourself, succeed and have an effect on the culture of the industry to be inclusive.

The first step starts at the individual. Believe in yourself, know you can conquer challenge personally, and professionally you may face. The reality is, discrimination is not going away. Individuals need to remain strong, and push forward.
