With more interest and more demand for environmentally conscious alternatives, the automotive market has seen a massive surge in hybrid and electric vehicles in recent years. A hybrid uses more than one means of propulsion, resulting in less fuel consumption and less C02 emissions than standard petroleum and diesel engines. Besides the obvious environmental benefit, many hybrids are also supported by federal tax rebates by Transport Canada; and with gas prices on the rise, choosing a hybrid can save you money at the pump. If you are interested in making the switch, you’ve come to the right place. We have compiled the best offerings for hybrids in 2022, with no sacrifice on safety features, fuel economy, and performance.
Number #1 on our list is the all new 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The Tucson has expanded into the hybrid category for the first time ever with the release of Tucson Hybrid and the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid. Typically, Hyundai plays it safe with conventional styling, but not this year. This fully redesigned Tucson has angular body patterns and illumination features, giving it a distinct luxury look and feel. On top of that, the Tucson scored Top Safety pick from IIHS in 2022 with the some of the highest safety and reliability scores in its segment. Even with an ever so slightly drop in fuel-economy compared to other SUVs in its class, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid was still named #1 in Hybrid and Electric SUVS by US news and were not surprised.
Max horsepower: 226 @ 5500HP |
Towing Capacity: 1,650lbs |
Fuel Economy: 6.3L/100km city, 6.6L/100km highway |
Second on our list, the Ford Escape Titanium Hybrid. The Hybrid Escape is not new to the EV game, with the first model being released in 2004, and the latest version making its debut in 2020. The newly redesigned Escape offers sophisticated and intuitive features such as blind spot monitoring, forward automatic emergency braking, and a hands-free foot activated liftgate. Besides being equipped with plenty of tech features, the Escape Hybrid also offers a responsive powertrain, natural feeling breaks and most notable, excellent fuel efficiency. Although, when buying the Hybrid, you will lose cargo space with compared to the standard Escape. Overall, we think the Escape stands out as a compelling pick for a hybrid SUV.
Max horsepower: 200 @ 6250HP |
Towing Capacity: 1,500lbs |
Fuel Economy: 5.5L/100km city, 6.4L/100km highway |
Third on our list is the Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid. Besides just looking sharp, the Hybrid Rav 4 offers more power and better fuel efficiency than its gas-powered counterpart, while keeping a roomy interior and plenty of cargo space. Arguably the most desirable feature of the Hybrid Rav 4 is its best in segment fuel economy, beating many of its in-class competitors like the Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. On the other hand, it is outdone by rivals in steering, and is known to be somewhat noisy. For us, those aren’t dealbreakers though; and with Toyota being such a pioneer in hybrid technology, the Rav 4 is arguably one of the best choices with little compromise.
Max horsepower: 219HP |
Towing Capacity: 2,000lbs |
Fuel Economy: 5.8L/100km city, 6.3L/100km highway |
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid has shown us that the days of paying ridiculous amounts for a hybrid while accepting a less than amazing driving experience are over. With a peppy acceleration, and unnoticeable shift between the gas engine and electric motor, you might actually forget you’re driving a hybrid. Although, you don’t see the typical fuel economy ratings that you would expect from a hybrid. Despite this, the Santa Fe Hybrid still beats typical gas-powered vehicles while offering no compromise on space.
Max horsepower: 277 @ 6000HP |
Towing Capacity: 2,000lbs |
Fuel Economy: 7.8L/100km |
The Kia Sorento marks Kia’s first mid size electrically assisted SUV. The Sorento has plenty going for it. As one of the largest SUV’s and hybrid vehicles, it is suitable for growing families or avid road-trippers. It also comes loaded with features like a large 10.25-inch navigation, user-friendly infotainment system, and blind spot collision avoidance. But, for a hybrid, the fuel-efficiency estimates are lower than anticipated.
Max horsepower: 261HP |
Towing Capacity: 2000lbs |
Fuel Economy: 7.8L/100km |
Moving into the hybrid cars segment, we have the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The new Camry is almost unrecognizable compared to the generations that came before it, for obvious reasons. The sporty, sleek, and sophisticated design is giving new life to the nearly 40-year-old sedan.
The hybrid model offers a strong powertrain, excellent fuel economy, and user-friendly features, among other things. Most notably, the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is also ranked #1 in the hybrid and electric cars category by US News. The combination of value and quality is hard to beat, which is why we saved a spot for the Camry Hybrid in our list of best hybrid vehicles.
Max horsepower: 208HP |
Towing Capacity: 880lbs |
Fuel Economy: 5.1L/100km combined |
While the Corolla may not be the most exciting sedan in the hybrid market, it might just be the most practical. To start, the Corolla hybrid has unbeatable fuel economy, in-fact, one of the best in class for the hybrid and EV segment. The Corolla also offers a budget friendly starting price, with no sacrifice on safety and technology features.
What would make the Corolla the perfect car for you? Well, if you are mainly a city driver who doesn’t need a ton of cargo space, or the need for speed, that is reason enough to check out the Corolla. Unfortunately, though, the Hybrid is only offered in one trim level.
Max horsepower: 121HP |
Towing Capacity: 1,500lbs |
Fuel Economy: 4.5L/100km |
